Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applied to both adult men and women. BMI is a reliable indicator of total body fat, which is related to the risk of diease and death. The score if valid for both men and women but it does have some limits. The limts are:

Waist/Hip Ratio

To calculate the ratio, use a non-stretchable tape. Make sure it is level around the body, parallel to the floor, and tighten it without depressing the skin. Measure the waist at its narrowest point width-wise, usually just above the belly button. Measure the hips around the widest part of the hip bones. Then divide the waist measurement by the hip measurement.

People who tend to carry their weight mostly in their hips and buttocks have roughly a pear body shape. People who tend to carry their weight mostly in the abdomen have more of an apple body shape. “Apples” are at increased risk for health problems associated with obesity, such as diabetes, coronary heart disease and high blood pressure. Taking extra care to keep weight within normal limits by eating right, exercising, and managing stress can help to alleviate these health risk factors.
